Smoking pot has been known to make people giggle. So if you’re looking to clutch your stomach from laughter while putting your head in the clouds, enjoy Barbary Coast and HellaFunny’s new comedy and cannabis collab, “Puff Puff Laugh.” A handful of comics are slated to take the stage. There’s a one-item minimum purchase, but Barbary Coast has some pretty dank deals—like a $7 preroll and a buy-one-get-one edible gummy deal. (XL)

The tropicalia-soaked indie duo Brijean got their start in Oakland before eventually landing in their current Los Angeles home during the pandemic. But vocalist/percussionist Brijean Murphy and multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Stuart still mean a lot to the Bay Area music community that they’re very much still ingrained with. This is an album release show for their new EP, Angelo, which will also feature opening sets from kaleidoscopic soul outfit The Seshen and Stuart under his free jazz moniker, Dougie Stu. (AS)

There wasn’t an accurate label for what the Psychedelic Furs were doing when they debuted with their self-titled 1980 LP. Was the group’s powerful, primal and vaguely sinister sonic approach new wave? Post-punk? Goth rock? Backed by a hypnotic, insistent and deceptively simple instrumental core, Richard Butler’s vocals came on like David Bowie after gargling with glass. The Furs went on to greater success and continued to push boundaries until disbanding in 1992. Reunited in 2000 and led by founding members Butler and brother Tim, the band released Made of Rain—their first new album in three decades—to widespread acclaim. (BK)

Originally from San Jose, Chris Manak (aka Peanut Butter Wolf) has been one of the most influential forces in hip-hop around the world via his LA-based Stones Throw Records label. PB Wolf is hands down one of the best party DJs in the business, always looking for new themes to put down in his sets when visiting the Bay, whether it’d be a certain era of funk and soul, a holiday-specific set of 45 RPM records, or strictly jams from his label’s 25 years of music. He’s sure to keep the crowd guessing at what’s become a ritualistic Stones Throw party. Beat Junkies turntablist extraordinaire and producer J Rocc—who’s just released his latest album, A Wonderful Letter—shares the bill. (AS)

Earlier this month, Mayor London Breed officially declared Aug. 1 “Jerry Garcia Day.” And the city continues its celebration of the late Grateful Dead guitarist and singer at the amphitheater that bears his name with the 20th anniversary return of “Jerry Day.” Melvin Seals and JBG and Stu Allen and Mars Hotel play the music of Garcia during this annual tribute. Follow that up with post-Jerry Day afterparties scattered throughout the Excelsior, where Garcia grew up. Gear up for Jerry Day with a familial talk about the Dead at Manny’s featuring Gracia’s daughter Trixie; manager of the Jerry Garcia Band, Steve Parish; and Garcia musical collaborator, David Nelson, in conversation the day before. Five years after their last release—the Grammy-nominated American Dream—11 years after their “goodbye” show at Madison Square Garden and 17 years after the cusp-of-middle age anxiety in “Losing My Edge,” LCD Soundsystem somehow still has enough gas in the tank to play an entire eight-date Bay Area residency. Divided between four shows at the Fox this week and four at the Warfield next week, arch-New Yorker James Murphy’s sprawling, Hot Chip-affiliated collective presides over a series of dance-punk sing-alongs. In the absence of any new material, LCD is sure to follow its own advice of “shut up and play the lists,” treating fans to “Tonite,” “Yr City’s a Sucker” and the anthemic “All My Friends.” (AK)

The quartet of early twenty-something ladies from Tokyo and three different Japanese prefectures first formed in 2015. Translated as NEW SCHOOL!, the group boasts an infectious style that blends pure pop, techno bliss and a punky attitude. Their fun brand of J-Pop was introduced internationally in 2021, when they partnered with tastemakers/fledgling music moguls 88rising to release “NAINAINAI.” Some fans were first drawn to Seishun Academy, their 88rising-produced series on YouTube that offers earnest and enthusiastic look at Japanese culture and traditions.
